Search data is a wonderfully candid thing. People rarely lie to a search bar, which makes the most-Googled diet or workout in a state a small window into its private hopes. The patterns that emerge are regional, textured, and often shaped as much by climate and culture as by anything else.
Here is a snapshot you can use to find your own state and the region around it. Workout preferences come from a 2024 analysis of Google search volume, and the diet leanings come from a separate search study; both reflect what residents look up, not what they necessarily practice.
The Diets We Look Up
Nationally, the most-searched diet in the country is the Mediterranean diet, which sits ahead of intermittent fasting and keto, according to a Google-search analysis summarized by AZ Big Media.
That is a quietly encouraging headline, because the Mediterranean pattern is also the eating style that U.S. News & World Report named its Best Diet Overall for eight straight years before it changed its ranking format. For once, the crowd and the experts are looking in the same direction.
Underneath that national headline, though, the map splits into distinct moods. Intermittent fasting draws the heaviest curiosity in places like California, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, and Texas, where the appeal of a flexible, clock-based approach seems to resonate. Plant-forward eating clusters along the coasts and in the District of Columbia, with Oregon, Hawaii, New York, New Jersey, and California showing the strongest interest in veganism. And keto holds court across a band of Southern and Plains states, including Mississippi, West Virginia, the Dakotas, Alabama, and Wyoming, where the promise of fast, weight-focused results tends to land hardest.
That last cluster is worth sitting with. Several of the states most curious about weight-loss diets are also the ones carrying the heaviest health burdens, a mismatch we will return to. The interest is clearly there. What differs from place to place is how easily that interest turns into a sustainable, everyday habit, and the price of that follow-through varies widely from state to state, as our look at the real cost of eating healthy in every state lays out.
The Workouts We Reach For
Movement preferences follow geography almost poetically. A 2024 study of workout-related Google searches, reported by OnFocus, gave nearly every state its own fitness signature. Colorado searched for CrossFit more than anywhere else in the country, logging around 843,500 CrossFit-related searches and topping the study overall, which fits its outdoorsy, high-intensity reputation.
From there the regional textures bloom. The Mountain West and Southwest lean toward Pilates and running, with Nevada and Arizona favoring the former and Utah topping out on the latter. The Pacific Northwest reaches for yoga, Washington especially. The Northeast is unmistakably bike-curious, with cycling leading in New York, Massachusetts, and several neighbors; New York alone generated roughly 2.36 million cycling-related searches. And in the South, energetic, community-driven workouts like Zumba and boxing show up strongly, with Hawaii's most-searched workout landing on Zumba as well. It is a reminder that the way a place likes to move is rarely random; it reflects weather, scenery, density, and local culture all at once.
