The Flavonoid Connection
Tea's possible role in all this likely comes down to what it carries. Tea leaves are rich in flavonoids, a family of plant compounds that includes the catechins found abundantly in green tea and the theaflavins and thearubigins that give black tea its color and body. These compounds act as antioxidants and have anti-inflammatory properties, and higher flavonoid intake from foods and drinks has been linked in earlier research to lower rates of cardiovascular and overall death. Researchers describe these as plausible mechanisms rather than settled biology, since teasing apart one compound's effect inside a whole diet is genuinely difficult.
The 2024 review also noticed something intriguing when it sorted studies by region. The link between tea and lower mortality was strongest in Asian populations, who mostly drink green tea, and was not statistically significant in European groups, who lean toward black tea often served with milk. The authors floated a careful hypothesis: proteins in milk may bind to tea's polyphenols and blunt some of their antioxidant activity. They were clear that this is a question to explore, not a conclusion to bank on.
Does Milk, Sugar, or a Hot Cup Change Things?
This is where the British evidence adds real-world texture. The UK Biobank study, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine and led by the National Cancer Institute, followed nearly half a million British adults, most of them black tea drinkers. People who drank two or more cups a day showed a 9 to 13 percent lower risk of death from any cause than non-drinkers, along with lower risks of death from cardiovascular disease, ischemic heart disease, and stroke. Reassuringly for habitual tea lovers, the association held up whether people took their tea hot or warm, with or without milk and sugar, and regardless of genetic differences in how quickly they process caffeine.
Sweeteners, however, may be the place where the picture shifts. A separate analysis of more than 195,000 UK Biobank participants found that the favorable links with longevity were clearest for unsweetened tea, while sugar-sweetened and artificially sweetened versions did not show the same association. For anyone weighing the bottled, sugary teas that fill American grocery shelves against a plain brewed cup, that is a meaningful distinction.
