The researchers scored each woman's diet against 12 different dietary pattern indexes. These included familiar approaches like the Mediterranean and DASH diets, broader plant-based and planetary health patterns, and more technical scores that captured how a diet might affect insulin, inflammation, and intake of ultra-processed foods. Across that wide range, a consistent theme emerged: the healthier, more plant-forward patterns were generally linked to less weight gain and a lower risk of obesity, while diets heavy in ultra-processed foods and certain animal-heavy, low-carbohydrate styles were tied to more weight gain.
A Closer Look at the Standout Patterns
Two patterns rose to the top for the lowest risk of weight gain and obesity. One was the Planetary Health Diet, an eating style built around minimally processed plant foods. The other was a low-insulinemic pattern, which emphasizes fiber-rich foods and lean proteins that help keep blood sugar and insulin steady. What's striking is how much these two patterns have in common on the plate. Both are rich in nuts, legumes, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, and both are low in red and processed meats, sodium, potatoes, and French fries.
The size of the effect was meaningful but modest, which is part of what makes it believable. According to reporting on the study's data, women whose diets scored highest on the most plant-forward, low-insulinemic pattern gained roughly 0.28 kilograms (about half a pound) less per year than those who scored lowest. That may sound small, but a difference like that can quietly add up across a decade-long transition. The researchers also accounted for factors that often muddy this kind of analysis, including age, race and ethnicity, income, physical activity, smoking, alcohol, hormone therapy use, total calories, and starting body weight, which makes the link harder to dismiss as a simple matter of lifestyle differences.
How the Study Was Done
For this research, menopause was defined as having gone a full year without a menstrual period. Participants filled out detailed food questionnaires every four years and reported their weight every two years, which let the team calculate how each woman's weight changed annually as she moved through the transition.
